If you aren’t thinking like a scientist then you need to be.
Scientists actively look for proof that they are wrong because the consequences for being wrong are significant and incredibly detrimental.
In the ‘non-scientific’ world, we don’t think that way, but we should. The stakes aren’t any lower and in some cases are higher. Usually we try to prove ourselves right, but that's an inferior way to think.
There are several reasons we should be thinking like scientists.
First, if we’re looking to prove ourselves right then we’ve already closed ourselves off from alternative opinions and viewpoints. We’ll be much less likely to admit fault or error on our part because we’re right and they’re wrong which will damage our relationships.
Second, if we’re right then they’re wrong and that automatically belittles and demonizes whoever the other party is. When we’ve demonized them in our minds then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because why would we ever admit they are right? Look how much of an idiot they are!
Third, if we’re looking to prove ourselves right then we’re not going to grow. You won’t be challenged by opinions and views and thoughts that differ from your own. I try to make a point of listening to people that I know or think I will disagree with and several of my opinions that I never thought I’d change have been changed as a result. I am better off for it.
Fourth, if we are looking to prove ourselves right, we’ll be able to find evidence that we claim proves us right. We may have to twist logic or twist the facts to suit our ends but you will be able to find the evidence that you want. There are still people that believe this earth is flat, for goodness sake.
So start thinking like a scientist. Use the scientific method.
Form a hypothesis (an opinion), test it, try to prove it wrong. If you don’t find any evidence that proves it wrong, then keep looking. Over time, maybe it can become a theory, but even scientific theory is continually tested.
Stop assuming you’re right.
